Steve Cox (April 9, 1946 - September 17, 2022)

After a courageous battle with cancer, Steve Cox of Pampa, Texas passed away Saturday Sept 17 . The memorial service is Saturday, September 24. Graveside service will be held at Fairview Cemetery at 10am in Pampa. He is survived by his wife Maxine.

Steve served his country as a member of the U. S. Army. After his retirement, Steve enjoyed the opportunity to drive a school bus for the White Deer ISD.

Stephen Wyndell “Fox” Cox, 76 years of age, of Pampa, Texas, was freed of his bondage with illness by his loving Savior, on the evening of Saturday, September 17, 2022, with his devoted wife by his side in the comfort of his home. He was born on April 9, 1946, to Wyndell and Irene Cox in the old Worley Hospital in Pampa.

For the vast majority of Fox’s life, he resided in Pampa and attended Pampa schools. He joined the US Army and was stationed in Korea for a large part of his tour. Upon coming back home, he began working in the oilfield and that’s where he found his niche. Always remaining in the oilfield in various capacities, over the years he has been employed by companies such as Haliburton, JT Richardson, Mobil Oil Company, on an offshore drilling unit and as a hot shot hauler. Following his retirement, he began driving a bus for White Deer ISD and as it turns out, he absolutely loved it…and the kids! Once his heart issues began, he had to give up his bus gig resulting in broken hearts from both him and the kids.

Towering over at 6 feet 4 inches, Fox was definitely a gentle giant. His warm and uplifting smile with his big ol’ teddy bear hugs could melt away any angst one was feeling. Not only did he love everybody, but it was generally reciprocated as he, too, was very well loved. Fox loved to golf, and it pretty well consumed his life for a while, but he eventually decided it more important to spend time with his soulmate and best friend, Maxine. They had been married on April 15, 1982 and had recently celebrated their 40th anniversary. The two of them complimented each other, where one fell short, the other would pick up the slack. 

Fox was a very down to earth man, never putting on airs for anyone – what you saw was what you got! He left a very rowdy past to dedicate his life to becoming a better Christian and shared the love of God with others. His ever-present smile and happy demeanor will be missed by so many whose lives he touched. 

He was greeted in Heaven by his parents; sister, Winnie Lou Cavilla; brother, James Cox and sister-in-law, Nelda Lamb; his very special nephew, Bryan Ellis; grandmother, Kassie Gore; grandpa, Carmon Gore; Papa Nichols and many more.

Those who remain to hold dear their memories of Fox are his wife of 40 years, Maxine Cox of Skellytown; three sons, James Roy Cox and wife Melissa of Seattle, Washington, Tommy Cox of Pampa, Clint Nichols and wife Kim of Yuba City, California; five grandchildren, Janyssa Kester Cox, Payton Cox, Stacyn Cox, Quinn Nichols and Liam Nichols; sisters-in-law, Nellie Cox of Springfield, Missouri, Gail Ellis and husband Clint of Las Lunas, New Mexico and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Celebration of Life Graveside services are scheduled for 10:00 am, Saturday, September 24, 2022, at Fairview Cemetery with Pastor Ronny Goode officiating. The family has entrusted the cremation care of their loved one to Winegeart Funeral Home.
